The Cake

So, this is how it started. I like to make cakes, but I will admit, I use box mixes. It just makes life that much easier, and if the decorating doesn't turn out, at least the cake taste good!
Here are my supplies: two cake mixes (one for 2 rounds, and the other for cupcakes) a pound cake, pretzels, licorice, a lot of frosting, starbursts, chocolate chips and marshmallows. Ready, Set, DECORATE!

trim the tops of the 2 rounds and put bottom side up. Trim one cake to "cup" the other cake. This is your base.

Frost the base green. Then assemble four of the cupcakes on top of each other and secure with a bamboo skewer. Trim the top of the pound cake to look like a roof and secure to base.

Seperate the "pull n peel" into three strands per piece. You won't need the whole bag, but I pulled the whole bag just in case.

Frost the barn and silo white. Make sure to use a lot of frosting to ensure that the licorice will stick.

Press the pieces onto the structure and trim off top edges. It is messy and sticky, so don't be afraid to get your hands gooey!

Once the licorice is set, stagger pieces of chex cereal for the roof.

For the animals: frost pigs pink, cows white and chicks yellow. Use chocolate chips for the eyes.

Chicks get dusted with coconut, starburts for wings, and pieces of licorice for mouths.

Pigs get a marshmallow( cut in half) for their noses, licorice piece for nostril, and pink starburst for ears.

Cows also get half marshmallow noses, frosted pink, orange starburst molded for ears, and melted chocolate piped onto for spots.

For the fence, you use melted chocolate and pretzels. Lay pretzels on flat surface and stagger to make it look like fence. Drizzle the chocolate and set up. Repeat for each fence piece. Place fence around on base and complete with cupcakes in farm.

A top view!

Close up of barn, sorry chick stole the light and it is bright!

Okay, I must give credit where credit is due. Yes, I made this cake. Nick helped stablize the structure and pull some of the licorice. I got the idea, however, from Family Fun magazine. It is a great place for ideas and they show you, step by step. I was so happy with the way it turned out. My kitchen was sticky and messy, but it was worth it.
Happy Birthday Lucy!
Just so you know, this is just her cake, not her bday blog. That is still coming, as we are doing the party with Nicks' family tonight. We had a party for her with my family while my parents were here, so now it is the Durants' turn.
Now, who wants cake?!

just more for your enjoyment!
Nailed it!

LOVE IT!
