A Scare for our Family

Mondays are usually no fun for anyone. Back to normal life. No more sleeping in, late breakfasts, or lazy days. It is back to work for dad and back to school for Dasher. Well, yesterday, Emmah had her own plans for Monday.

She came into bed with me, once Nick left for work. No big deal, only an hour or so before I get up anyway. About 6:30 am when I was contemplating about getting up, I felt the bed start shaking. I sit up quickly, only to see my four year old daughter having a seizure. I yell for Dasher to bring me the phone. He runs into my room, throws me the phone and turns on the light. There she is, arched almost completely backwards, eyes bigger than quarters, completely dilated and glassed over. Her skin was whiter than white, and she was foaming at the mouth. She was not responsive to me, or to the light or anything. I quickly dial 911, (something I hope to never do again) and describe to the operator what is going on. I had never seen anyone have a seizure, but I knew what not to do. You don't try and move them, put things in their mouth, or try to shake them out of it. You sit there with them, keep them safe, and talk to them. That is just what I did. Luckily with her being on our bed, I knew she couldn't hurt herself, so I watched her shake for a long 45 seconds. Once, they shaking stopped, the operator asked me to describe her coloring, eyes, breathing, and temperature. I couldn't get her to open her eyes, her coloring was still not normal and there was no fever or cold sweats.

The paramedics got there, and our brave Dasher unlocked the door, and showed them where to come. They quickly hooked her up to oxygen and checked all of her vitals. They even checked her blood sugar to make sure that is wasn't a diabetic seizure. Nick's family has a history of diabetes. They got her stabilized, but she was still nonresponsive. They decided to take her via ambulance to the ER. That is when I started to panic. Nick works 45 min away, who do I get to watch Dash and Bosston? A member of our ward happened to be driving by, saw the ambulance and immediately turned around and came inside to find Emmah being carried out by the paramedic. She stayed with our kids until Nick's sister got there.

The drive to the hospital seemed like an eternity. Emmah still was nonresponsive. No eye movement and just did not want to wake up. Finally, when we were almost to the hospital, she responded to my voice and opened her eyes for a quick second. That was a good sign. We got to the hospital with daddy waiting for us. He was able to get a hold a bishopric member to come and help give her a blessing. They monitored her for awhile, did some blood work, and sent us on our way. (3hours later) We were given a medicine if it is to happen again, and she is due for some tests. She has an EEG scheduled, and at this time I waiting for MRI to call me back to schedule that. We don't know why this happened, and hope it never happens again. She is back to her normal self and remembers nothing about what happened yesterday morning.

I was scared, but I must admit, I handled myself very well, and did not panic. I am thankful that she is fine, and since it only lasted 45 seconds, there is no permanent damage done. Please keep Emmah and our family in our thoughts and prayers, and I will keep all updated as we learn more. Thank you

OH Heidi I am so sorry you had to go through that, how scary... you know, my friend here at Church, her son started getting random Seizures... after the third one, they found out he had epilepsy. I hope that doesnt scare you, but no brain damage and he doesnt remember any of the seizures.. he is almost 3 years old. We will keep Emmah in our prayers. Love you!
